Harvard Referencing (Author–Date) 2025: The Gen-Z Guide 💡📚Harvard Referencing (Author–Date) 2025: The Gen-Z Guide 💡📚

Harvard is an author–date style: you put (Author, Year) in your essay, and you list full details at the end, alphabetically by author. Page numbers use p. or pp. for quotes. Online stuff usually adds Available at: URL and (Accessed: Day Month Year). Different schools have slight variations, but a very common one is Cite Them Right (CTR) used by many UK/US universities. Open University

What “Harvard” actually means (in easy terms) 🧠

  • In-text = mini shout-out: (Nguyen, 2024) or Nguyen (2024, p. 15) for a direct quote. Use pp. for multiple pages; if there’s no page (like a web page), you can cite a para. number. Open University

  • Reference list = full receipts: goes at the end, A–Z by author surname. Open University

  • Styles vary a bit: Schools may tweak punctuation/caps. A widely used version is Cite Them Right (latest updates reflected in university handouts). Always follow your teacher’s instructions first. Birmingham City Universitylibguides.liverpool.ac.uk

Core rules you’ll use 24/7 🧩

  1. One author: (Ali, 2023)

  2. Two authors: (Ali and Park, 2023)

  3. Three authors: (Ali, Park and Chen, 2023)

  4. Four+ authors (in-text): use first author + et al. → (Ali et al., 2023). In your reference list, list all authors (CTR), unless your school allows et al. for 10+ authors — check your local guide and be consistent. Newcastle University

  5. Same author, same year: add letters → (Kim, 2022a), (Kim, 2022b). Your reference list must match (2022a then 2022b) — sort by title. Open Universitylibrary.rgu.ac.uk

  6. No author: use the organization (CDC, 2024) or, if none, the title. Open University

  7. No date: write (no date) in both in-text and reference. dmu-ac-uk.libanswers.com

  8. Secondary referencing (you read a source that quotes another): use quoted in/cited in and reference the source you actually read. (Lee, 2015, cited in OU, 2022). Use sparingly. Open University

Formatting 101 (CTR flavor) 🎯

  • Book titles & journal names are italic.

  • Article or chapter titles use sentence case and are in single quotes.

  • Online items usually show Available at: URL (Accessed: Day Month Year).

  • Use a hanging indent in the reference list.
All reflected in current Cite Them Right style sheets used by universities. Newcastle University

In-text quick examples 📝

  • Paraphrase (no page): Good referencing matters (Shah and Papadopoulos, 2015). Open University

  • Quote (with pages): “Polyphenol oxidizing reactions” form new flavour compounds (Toker et al., 2020, pp. 585–586). Open University

  • No page available (web): (OU Library, 2025, para. 3). Open University

Pro tips to avoid losing points 🧯

  • Match in-text + reference list perfectly (author + year). libguides.bham.ac.uk

  • Alphabetize by the first author’s surname; for same author & year, use a/b/c AND put those letters on both the citation and the reference. Open Universitylibrary.rgu.ac.uk

  • Use p./pp./para. correctly for quotes/specifics. Open University

  • Be consistent with commas, spaces, italics, and capitalization — CTR templates show exactly where each goes. Newcastle University

Harvard vs. APA (super short) 🥊

  • Both are author–date.

  • APA has stricter capitalization rules (sentence case titles; title-case journal names) and different punctuation; Harvard (CTR) uses its own punctuation/quotes/italics patterns. When in doubt, copy the CTR template exactly. Newcastle University
