Mathematics Scholarships and Grants

If you have always been a whiz at math and have decided to continue your studies in that field, there are many opportunities for scholarships, just waiting for you to find them! Not only do you have those targeting mathematics students available to you, but you should also investigate general scholarships, as well as those based on ethnicity and gender. A myriad of scholarships are offered in each of these categories each year that go unapplied for. That knock at your door is opportunity – don’t let it pass you by.

Are you an outstanding math major with a proven academic track record? Can you demonstrate your need for financial assistance? If you satisfy both of these eligibility requirements, you should look into this award. Differing numbers of these scholarships are given each year, and the amounts of the awards vary annually. Tenie Remmel Memorial

BAE SYSTEMS

If you are a U.S. citizen, and plan to settle down after graduation in the San Diego area with a career in computer sciences, you just might qualify for this one-year scholarship of up to $5,000. Other eligibility requirements include being a full-time student who is majoring in computer science, applied mathematics, computer, or electrical engineering with a computer science emphasis. Klara D. Eckart

Gary C. Reynolds Memorial

Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics Scholarship Program (CSEMS)

This is a two-year program targeting upper-division full-time undergraduate students who are enrolled in the Jacobs School of Engineering or Mathematics with any declared major in one of those fields. It is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, with the intention of encouraging more low-income and under-served groups to be students of computer science, engineering, or math. The program fulfills its mission by awarding scholarships to academically talented students in these groups. The University of California Leadership Excellence through Advanced Degrees Program (UC LEADS)

This one-year scholarship is awarded to UCSD upper-division students who are majoring in science, engineering, or math, and who have decided to pursue a Ph.D. in one of these fields. Funded by the University of California Office of the President (UCOP), UC LEADS was created to aid development of future government, industry, or educational leaders in the state. Scholars selected for this award will benefit from numerous educational experiences which, in turn, will lead to many graduate and fellowship opportunities. As part of the program, students will conduct research and will actively participate in networks with scholars and current state leaders. The Academic Enrichment Programs (AEP) and the Office of Graduate Studies and Research (OGSR) are jointly responsible for the operation of this program at UC San Diego. The Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program

The United States Congress created this program in 1986 in honor of Barry M. Goldwater, for his 56 years of national service as a soldier and a statesman. Included were his 30 years in the U.S. Senate. The award honors the leadership, vision and courage demonstrated by Goldwater throughout his career, and stands as an endowed recognition program to encourage like qualities in others. The Rueben H. Fleet Memorial

If you plan to get your undergraduate degree in math, science or engineering, here are the eligibility requirements for this scholarship. You must be currently enrolled in an accredited 4-year university in San Diego County, or be a resident of the county who is enrolled in a like 4-year institution in the county, or be a resident of San Diego County currently enrolled in an accredited 4-year university in the United States. You may also be eligible if you are currently enrolled in an accredited 2-year college but can provide proof of acceptance to a 4-year university meeting one of the above requirements. You must have already completed either 54 semester units or 72 quarter units, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 based on a 4.0 system. Past recipients may re-apply, but will be in competition with new applicants. This scholarship pays for tuition, books, fees, and room and board. Alice T. Schafer Mathematics Prize — Association for Women in Mathematics

This scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate woman who has consistently demonstrated excellence in mathematics. Application is by nomination and all members of the mathematics community are encouraged to submit nominations for this prestigious award. Hispanic Scholarship Fund

The vision of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund is to strengthen our country by increasing the number of Hispanic Americans graduating from college. Their mission is to double the number of Hispanics earning college degrees, and since its inception in 1975, the HSF has awarded over $115 million to more than 61,000 Hispanic students from all 50 United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Eligibility for the scholarships is based on the student academic achievement, financial need, personal strength, and proven leadership skills. Selma and Robert Silagi Award for Undergraduate Excellence

This award is presented by the Department of Mathematics each year to an outstanding senior student of the natural sciences. Selection is solely based on merit. This scholarship was created as a tribute to the memory of Dr. Selma Silagi by members of her family. Any freshman or transfer female who has an appreciation for engineering, mathematics, and science and displays outstanding leadership, excellence in academics and extra-curricular activities. One $500 scholarship will be awarded in Spring of 2010 for Fall 2010 tuition. Students who declare major in the following programs are eligible for this scholarship:

STEM Scholars Program

The STEM Scholars program is a five-year program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) starting in Fall 2010. The program annually awards 10 renewable scholarships to incoming freshmen or transfer students of approximately $3,800, increasing the group to 40 students in years four and five. Eligible students must select a major offered in the College of Engineering, Mathematics, and Science, demonstrate academic excellence and show financial need. This program crosses STEM disciplines within the College of EMS by building a strong network through various group activities.
