If someone told you there was a bag of money just out there with your name on it, you’d go for it! Well, there just might be, if you meet the qualifications, which are varied and diverse. Washington has a wide range of college scholarships available for eligible students, and there just might be one for you! Take a look at some of the opportunities listed below and apply! You’ll never find your pot of gold unless you try.

American Legion Washington Scholarships

Are you a senior in high school living in our state with a parent who is a member of the American Legion. If you are the dependent or child of a deceased member of the Legion or Legion Auxiliary, you may qualify for this scholarship. You will also have to substantiate your need for financial assistance, and will require letters of recommendation. There are two awards given each year: one for $2,500, and another for $1,500. Carl N. & Margaret Karcher Founders’ Scholarship

This scholarship is directed toward a high school senior who is a resident of, among other states, Washington. Funds provided are to be utilized at an accredited 2 or 4-year college or university. There is no major field of study specified for this award, and, if selected you will receive $1,000. If you are in the immediate family of an employee of Carl’s Jr. Restaurants, or one of its affiliates, you are ineligible for this scholarship. MESBEC – Catching the Dream

Are you an American Indian or Native Alaskan??? If you are at least ¼ Native American and are an enrolled member of the tribe, you may qualify for this scholarship. You should be committed to majoring in math, engineering, general business, computer sciences, health sciences, or medicine. Additional eligibility requirements include an excellent scholastic record, character references. and proven leadership ability. Along with the application you will need to submit an essay, transcript, letters of reference, and proof of eligibility. There are multiple scholarships given each year, ranging from $500 to $5,000. Horatio Alger Washington Scholarship Program

If you are a high school senior who has already faced and overcome great obstacles in your life, you need to take a closer look at this program.

You must be a graduating high school senior, living in our state, who can demonstrate financial need. You must have a history of academic achievement, with at least a 2.0 GPA. Depth of character and your commitment to community service are also deciding factors. To apply you will need to submit an essay, copy of your transcript, a letter of support, and an income statement. The scholarship may be used for full-time undergraduate study at accredited universities and colleges in the United States. There are multiple awards, each in the amount of $5,000. Seattle Jaycees Scholarship

Are you a graduating high school senior who has loved doing volunteer work throughout high school? If you have a record of contributing your time in support of others, this is the scholarship for you!!! You don’t need to live in Seattle to be eligible – anywhere in the state will do. Along with an application you will need to submit letters of recommendation, an essay, current transcript, a list of your community service and extra-curricular activities. There is a $5.00 application fee. This award is in the amount of $1,000, and there are a number of them to be given out. Washington State American Indian Endowed Scholarship

If you have close ties to the American Indian community and culture in our state, and would like to major in a field that would allow you to serve it in some form or fashion after graduation, this scholarship might work for you. There are a number of awards given each year, ranging from $500 to $2,000. Eligibility requirements include a record of excellent academic achievement and community service. You must be able to substantiate your financial need by completing the free FAFSA application on line (see ‘note’ on previous page for details). Washington State Scholars Program

This is a four-year award designated for you high academic achievers out there! To be eligible, you must rank in the top 1% of your graduating class. To apply you must be a high school senior living in Washington State, and you must be nominated by your high school principal or guidance counselor. Multiple scholarships will be awarded, each based on actual tuition costs at whichever school you have chosen to attend within the state. Amounts vary but range from $2,725 to $6,750.
