You’re a high school senior this year! You’re ready to embark on the next part of life’s journey and ready to go to college. Despite all the activities and fun with friends and college applications, why don’t you take a deep breath, and think about applying for scholarships, too. Everyone can use a break with the high costs of higher education! Listed below are some great opportunities, but if you don’t find one here that’s just right for you, go see your high school guidance counselor who has access to many, many more. American Legion Maryland

If you live in the state, are between the ages of 16-19, and are the dependent of a veteran, you might be interested in this scholarship. It is meant for undergraduate study, and there is no major field noted. Along with your application you must provide proof of eligibility and a transcript. The award is in the amount of $500. Horatio Alger District of Columbia, Maryland & Virginia

If you are a high school senior who has already faced and overcome great obstacles in your life, you need to take a closer look at this program.

Additional requirements are residency in one of the three states noted above; that you be able to demonstrate financial need; that you have a minimum GPA of 2.0 and have maintained a good academic record; that you are serious-minded in your approach to your future; and, that you are service orientated. Along with your completed application you will need to submit an essay, copy of your transcript, a letter of support, and an income statement. The scholarship may be used for full time undergraduate study at any accredited 2 or 4-year college in the United States. There is no specified major field of study. Maryland Educational Assistance Grant

Do you know what makes this opportunity so great???? Unlike a loan, it never has to be paid back! To be eligible you and your parents must be Maryland residents, and must prove the need for financial assistance. To do so, first get on line and complete the free FAFSA application (details in above ‘note’). Applicants will be ranked by need according to guidelines of Expected Family Contrition, with those most in need being awarded first. This is a renewable grant but you must reapply for the grant and fill out a new FAFSA application each year. Grants vary in amount from $400-$3,000, and funds may be used for full-time study at a 2 or 4-year accredited college or university. Howard P. Rawlings Guaranteed Access (GA) Grant

This grant is awarded by the state of Maryland and when combined with a Pell Grant and the Expected Family Contribution, will help defray the costs of full-time study at a designated Maryland college or university. You may apply if you are a high school senior who can prove your need for financial assistance to continue your education.
