Hawaii Scholarships and Grants

ALOHA!!! You’re almost out of high school and it’s time to get serious about your future education, so let’s talk about college and help to get there. They say ‘life is a beach’ and living in Hawaii, certainly proves that! But, now it’s time for all of your hard work to make good grades and good test scores pay off. Here are a number of possibilities – scholarships and grants – available to you for school — at home or on the mainland. Best of luck!

NASA Hawaii Space Grant Consortium

This scholarship covers full time undergrad study at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Hilo. You have to be a resident of the state, and plan to major in astronomy, geology/earth sciences, oceanography/marine studies, physics, zoology, engineering or geography. There are a number of other eligibility and application requirements for this award. First, you must be sponsored by a faculty member who will be your mentor for the covered period. Your chosen field of study needs to be relevant to NASA purpose of exploring space or air transportation. Please visit the web site www.spacegrant.hawaii.edu for more information.

Note: All of the scholarships listed below have financial need as a consideration, and all of them require that you complete the Free Application for Federal Student Assistance (FAFSA) on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Upon completion you will receive your Student Aid Report (SAR) based upon the results of your application.

Cayetano Foundation

If you are going to require financial assistance to further your education, you need to get the details on this one. The award can be used at any 2 or 4-year institution in the United States. You need to be a high school senior and a resident of Hawaii to be eligible, and must also have an excellent record of academic achievement, demonstrate financial need, and have demonstrated your depth of character in dealing with others. Application requirements include letters of recommendation, transcript, FAFSA and SAR. An essay is required. In it, look into the future at the person you would like to be when you are in your 50’s. Imagine the life you’ve lived, and list accomplishments you’ve made. Why do you think they are significant? There is a personal statement required describing you community service accomplishments. Community Scholarship Fund

If your major interests fall into one of these categories – general arts, architecture, education, humanities/liberal arts; or, social/behavioral sciences – you need to read on!!! This is a scholarship funded for those students in need of financial assistance, who have maintained good grades (GPA of 3.0), are service oriented, and demonstrations of your depth of character. Application requires an essay, transcript, FAFSA and SAR, and transcript. A permanent address in Hawaii is required. You should also be able to demonstrate your potential for filling community needs by relating your accomplishments, motivation, initiative, and vision, and show your intention to return to the islands after your education is complete. Cora Aguda Manayan Fund

If you are of Filipino ancestry and are interested in a health related profession, this group is waiting for your application. The award can be used for full-time study in the United States, but preference is given to those who intend to study in Hawaii. Eligibility depends on financial need, grades, and depth of character. Application requirements are essay, transcript, FAFSA and SAR. Applicants must have a permanent Hawaiian address, and if you take up residency on the mainland to study, you must have relatives still living here. Dolly Ching

If you live on Kauai, and want to stay in the islands and continue your education within the University of Hawaii system, check this out. Students applying for this award must prove financial need, be a high school senior, have good grades (minimum 2.7 GPA), and have demonstrated depth of character and a service orientation. Thz Fo Farm Fund

Are you Chinese? Have you ever considered a career in gerontology? Are you a permanent resident of Hawaii? Then read on! Applications will be considered based on grades, financial need, and a description of your depth of character. Along with the FAFSA and SAR you will need to submit a transcript showing a minimum GPA of 2.7. For details go to www.hawaiicommunityfoundation.org.

Shuichi, Katsu and Hsuyo Suga Scholarship

You’ve really worked hard to make good grades – at least a 3.0 GPA – and you’re a whiz in math, physics, science, computer/information sciences, or technology. If so, this particular scholarship may be your ticket to go further with your education. You must be a permanent resident of Hawaii, and be able to prove a need for financial assistance. Rosemary & Nellie Ebrie Fund

This scholarship may be used at any 2 or 4-year college or university in the United States, but you must be a Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander and be a long-time resident, born and currently living on the island of Hawaii to, qualify for it. There is no major field of study specified. You do have to have a GPA of 2.7, demonstrate need for financial assistance, and have history of showing depth of character.
