Tennessee Scholarships and Grants

Calling all you high school seniors in Tennessee!!! You’ve worked hard, made your grades, and now it’s time to think about college – seriously!!! A scholarship or a grant might be just what you need to make your college education possible. And, even if that’s not the case, it never hurts to get some recognition – which is what a scholarship is — for hard work, well done. Scholarships and grants are bountiful in our state. There are some listed below, and your guidance counselor can probably tell you about a lot of others! Give it a whirl – you’ll never know if you don’t apply!

American Legion Tennessee Auxiliary – Vara Gray Scholarship Fund

If you are graduating senior high school student living in our state, and you are the dependent of a veteran, you’re half way to qualifying for this scholarship. In addition to your application you will need to submit letters of recommendation, an essay, and your nomination from a local American Legion Auxiliary Unit. Awards are in the amount of $500 each. Scarlett Family Foundation

The recipient of this award must be a Tennessee high school senior who intends to major in business, accounting, finance, banking or management/administration. You will have to demonstrate your need for financial aid by completing the free FSFSA application on line (details are in ‘note’ above). In addition, you will have to submit an essay and copy of your transcript. The award is in the amount of at least $2,500, and multiple awards are given each year. HOPE Access Grant

This grant may be used to fund your freshman year at certain specific universities and colleges in Tennessee. To qualify, you must be a graduating Tennessee high school senior. You must be able to prove your need for financial assistance by completing the free FSFSA application (see ‘note’ above for details). You must also have an outstanding record of academic achievement with at least a 2.75 GPA, a minimum 18 ACT, and 860 SAT. If you would like more details, go to the website: www.tn.gov/collegepays.

Robert C. Byrd Honors

You have worked hard and have shown consistently high scholastic achievement! Now, due to your hard work, you may qualify for this prestigious scholarship. You must be a Tennessee resident and a high school senior to apply. There are two ways you can qualify for this prestigious scholarship: if you have a 3.5 GPA you’ve already qualified; or, if you have a 3.0 GPA, along with a 24 on your ACT or 1090 on your SAT, you will also qualify. Award is renewable for up to four years, with an initial amount of $1,500. This award may be used for tuition to attend schools anywhere in the United States. Application requires an essay, transcript, high school profile from your guidance office along with your SAT scores, and a list of your scholastic achievements, awards and honors. Ned McWherter Scholars Program

If you scored in the 95th percentile on your ACT/SAT, have at least a 3.5 GPA, and are a graduating high school senior living in Tennessee, you’ve already qualified for this program. Multiple awards are given each year in the amount of $6,000. Check the website www.tn.gov/collegepays for more details.
