Oregon Scholarships and Grants

Congratulations High School Seniors! Here’s hoping you are enjoying your Senior Year and all the wonderful things it has to offer. It’s is certainly a busy time, full of activity – with friends, applying to college, special activities – but, stop for a minute and take a deep breath. Who can’t use a little financial help when it comes to setting out for college? We’ve gathered a few opportunities you might be interested in. However, if you don’t find anything here, don’t stop. Go talk to your high school guidance counselor and find out what else is out there. Best of luck as you set out on the next big stage of your journey – college!!!

Spirit of Youth Scholarship

All of these scholarships are offered by the American Legion or the American Legion Auxiliary. All require that you reside in Oregon, that you are a high school senior, and that you be either a dependent of a disabled or deceased veteran of the U.S. Military. Only one – the nurses scholarship – addresses a specific major field of study. Amounts of the awards do vary:

• Department of Oregon Scholarship: $1,000
• Nurses’ Scholarship: $1,500
• President’s Scholarship: $1,000 – $2,500
• Spirit of Youth Scholarship: $1,000

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Foundation

This is a renewable scholarship targeting applicants of Alaskan native or American Indian heritage. You must also be a high school student residing in several designated states of which Oregon is one. If you are planning a career in science, engineering, math, medicine, health services technology or administration, or other related fields, and a member of AISES, you should follow up on this opportunity. There is a grade requirement of at least 2.0 GPA. You will be expected to submit letters of recommendation citing your leadership abilities, personal strength, and commitment to community service. The amount of this award is $2,500, and it is renewable for up to four years until you earn your degree. For more details, check out the website: www.www.aises.org.

Horatio Alger Oregon Scholarship Program

If you are a high school senior who has already faced and overcome great obstacles in your life, you need to take a closer look at this program.

Other requirements include Oregon residency; that you be able to demonstrate financial need; that you have a minimum GPA of 2.0 and have a record of high academic achievement; that you are serious-minded in your approach to your future; and, that you are service orientated. Along with your completed application you will need to submit an essay, copy of your transcript, a letter of support, and an income statement. The scholarship may be used for full time undergraduate study at any accredited 2 or 4-year college in the United States. There is no specified major field of study. Robert C. Byrd Honors

College is a big step, but you are ready for it! So, before it’s too late, why not apply for a scholarship to help out? The amount of this award varies from year to year, but is renewable beyond your freshman year. It is to be applied to full time undergraduate study at any 2 or 4-year institution in the United States. To apply you must be a high school senior living in Oregon. You must have a record of high academic achievement with GPA of at least 3.85, or Oregon GED of 3500. You will also need either a 1300 on the SAT or 29 on the ACT. Oregon Scholarship Fund: Community College Student

If you have a record of outstanding academic achievement, and can prove your need for financial assistance to continue your education beyond high school, this scholarship might be just right for you. To prove need for financial aid, you will need to complete the free FSFSA application on line (details in ‘note’ on previous page). Funds may be used at designated community colleges offering 2-year degrees. In addition to the FSFSA application and your transcript, you will need to submit two essays. Carl N. & Margaret Karcher Founders’ Scholarship

This scholarship is directed toward a high school senior who is a resident of, among other states, Oregon. Funds provided are to be utilized at an accredited 2 or 4-year college or university. There is no major field of study specified for this award, and, if selected you will receive $1,000. If you are in the immediate family of an employee of Carl’s Jr. Restaurants, or one of its affiliates, you are ineligible for this scholarship.
