New Mexico Scholarships and Grants

Calling all you high school seniors in New Mexico! You’ve worked hard, made your grades, and now it’s time to think about college – seriously!!! A scholarship or a grant might be just what you need to make your college education possible. And, even if that’s not the case, it never hurts to get some recognition – which is what a scholarship is — for hard work, well done. Scholarships and grants are bountiful in our state. There are some listed below, and your guidance counselor can probably tell you about a lot of others! Give it a whirl – you’ll never know if you don’t apply!

Past President’s Parley Nurses’ Scholarship

If you always wanted to grow up and work in healthcare, now’s your chance!!! You must be a high school senior and live in New Mexico. Application requires a copy of your school registration and a letter of request for assistance. For further details, go see your high school guidance counselor, or contact:

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Foundation

This is a renewable scholarship targeting applicants of Alaskan native or American Indian heritage. To apply you must be a member of a tribe with at least ¼ native blood. You must also be a high school student residing in certain designated states of which New Mexico is one. In order to be eligible you must be able to demonstrate a need for financial assistance, leadership ability, a significant depth of interest in your future, and orientation to community service. You must be planning a career in science, engineering, math, medicine, health services technology/administration, or other related fields, and you must be a member of AISES. There is a grade requirement of at least 2.5 GPA. The amount of this award is $2,500, and it is renewable for up to four years until you earn your degree. Carl N. & Margaret Karcher Founders’ Scholarship

This scholarship is directed toward a high school senior who is a resident of, among other states, New Mexico. Funds provided are to be utilized at an accredited 2 or 4-year college or university. There is no major field of study specified for this award, and, if selected you will receive $1,000. If you are in the immediate family of an employee of Carl’s Jr. Restaurants, or one of its affiliates, you are ineligible for this scholarship. New Mexico Legislative Endowment Program

If you can show your need for financial assistance to attend college, are a high school senior, and live in New Mexico, you may qualify for this program. You will need to complete the free FAFSA application on line (see ‘note’ above). If selected for this award, public 4-year universities and colleges throughout the state may give up to $2,500 per student per year. Likewise, 2-year schools may award up to $1,000 per year. This is an unusual program in that part-time students are also eligible and would receive a pro-rated amount based on class load. New Mexico Scholars Program

This scholarship is awarded annually for use at New Mexico public colleges and universities as well as College of Santa Fe, St. John’s College, and College of the Southwest. It covers full tuition, books and required fees. The number of awards given each year is dependent upon the funds available at that time. To apply you must be a high school senior and resident of New Mexico. You must also be able to demonstrate your need for financial aid, and must have a record of outstanding academic achievement. To apply, get in touch with the financial aid office of your chosen school. New Mexico Student Incentive Grant

This is a renewable scholarship in the form of a grant, and therefore will never need to be repaid. It is intended to use in the same schools as noted in the previous description, with the addition of the Institute of American Indian Art, Crownpoint Institute of Technology, Dine College, and the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute. To be eligible you must demonstrate your need for financial assistance by completing the free, on line application (FAFSA) and described in the note on the previous page. Again, with this program, part-time students are eligible for pro-rated awards. Amounts range from $200 to $2,500.
