High School Seniors!!! What a time you are having this year. You’re running in seven directions at once, trying to tie up loose ends in high school, while planning the big leap to college. You’ve already applied to schools, but why don’t you take a minute or two and apply for scholarships, too. So many students neglect this part, and you’d be amazed how much scholarship money goes unclaimed each year simply because no one took the time to apply. Listed below are just a few of the opportunities available to you. But, if none of these appeal to you, go visit your high school guidance counselor and find out what else is out there. American Legion Nebraska President’s Scholarship

If you are going to apply for the National President’s Scholarship, then you need to apply for this one, too. This is a $200 award that is given to those applicants who are not chosen as Nebraska’s candidate for the national award. To apply you must be a high school senior living in Nebraska. Nurse Gift Tuition

This is an American Legion Auxiliary scholarship that will be awarded to an senior high school student, living in Nebraska, who is a descendent or dependent of a U.S. military veteran, in pursuit of a career in nursing. To apply you will have to demonstrate financial need, submit your transcript, letters of recommendation, certificate of eligibility, and an essay. The award is in the amount of $200-400. Horatio Alger Nebraska Ak-Sar-Ben

If you are a high school senior who has already faced and overcome great obstacles in your life, you need to take a closer look at this program.

General requirements include ability to demonstrate financial need; that you have a minimum GPA of 2.0, and have a record of good academic achievement; that you are serious-minded in your approach to your future; and, that you are service oriented. Along with your completed application you will need to submit an essay, copy of your transcript, a letter of support, and an income statement. The scholarship may be used for full-time undergraduate study at 2 or 4-year colleges or universities in the United States. There is no specified field of study noted for this award, but you must be in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree. For more details please check out this website: www.horatioalger.org/scholarships. Midwestern High Education Compact

This is a renewable scholarship that is directed toward high school seniors residing in Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, or Wisconsin. Multiple awards are given in the amount of $4,430, and may be used at designated schools in those states. Nebraska Robert C. Byrd Honors

You have worked hard and have shown consistently high scholastic achievement! Now, due to that hard work, you may qualify for this prestigious scholarship. You must be a Nebraska resident and a high school senior to apply. Scholastically, you must have a minimum of 30 on your ACT. The award is renewable for up to four years, with an initial amount of $1,500 per year. Students at military academies are not eligible. This award may be used for expenses at schools located anywhere in the United States. An application may be obtained from your high school guidance counselor. Nebraska State Grant

This is a scholarship/grant and does not have to be repaid after graduation. To apply you should be a high school senior living in Nebraska, and you must be able to prove need for financial assistance. To do so, fill out the free FSFSA application (see the ‘note’ on the previous page). You must also have qualified for a Pell Grant. All deadlines and other requirements are determined by the individual schools, and awards are made on a rolling basis.
